What Is Acute Diverticulitis?

There are lots of foods to avoid during a Diverticulitis attack. If you've been eating a low fiber diet over a number of years you, may have had occasions of straining when sitting on the porcelain throne. This is the combination of factors that can lead to Diverticular disease.

If you are looking for this information you may have had a recent Diverticulitis attack or you may be in the middle of one right now. If so, I empathize. If you feel like eating, there are some foods you must avoid. The idea is to rest the colon so that you have a chance to heal. Then, you are going to have to change some of the foods you are eating to include a lot more fiber once you are feeling better and some supplements like omx probiotic.

An Explanation of Diverticulitis

Diverticulitis is an inflammation of an abnormal pouch in the intestinal wall. A single pouch is call Diverticulum. When several of these pouches exist it is known as Diverticulosis and the pouches themselves as Diverticula. While these small protruding pouches can develop in any part of the intestine they are most commonly found in the colon, especially in the lowest part of the colon. Once Diverticulosis develops it cannot be reversed.

Diverticula occurs most often after the age of 40 and it is estimated that after the age of 60, fifty percent of the population in the United States has developed this ailment. Diverticula is thought to develop due to high pressure in the colon. This pressure against the wall causes pouches of the intestinal lining to bulge outwardly. These bulges can hinder the passage of stool through the intestine. When substances such as fecal matter get trapped in these pouches, they can become infected. This is was is known as Diverticulitis.

What Foods Should You Avoid?

Interestingly, foods that you must avoid during an Diverticulitis attack are the foods you must eat to prevent one. All high fiber foods would only create bulk in the intestine and this is what you want to avoid. Doctors normally prescribe a clear liquid diet, ice, Popsicle, coffee or tea without milk or cream, clear broth, etc. for a couple of days. During an Diverticulitis attack you should avoid:

whole grain breads

cereals and pasta

vegetables

fruits, including canned fruits

yogurt, pudding, ice cream

cream-based soups

red meat

cheese

peanut butter

seeds and nuts

marmalade

corn and corn products

chili peppers

nuts

sesame seeds, including buns with sesame seeds on them.

corn, pop corn, sweet corn, corn flour, tortillas

peppers

strawberries

vegetables such as cauliflower, brussel sprouts, broccoli, etc.

You should also avoid sugar and carbonated drinks, apples, plums and dried fruits. Once the condition starts to resolve, and you start feeling better, you can slowly add more fiber to your diet.

In a couple of days, you can add foods such as eggs, pasta and bananas, etc. You want to start eating "soft" foods for a short while after the condition resolves and then slowly add more fiber into your daily diet.

This short article only addresses the avoidance of food during an attack. It does not fully discuss how to eat immediately after the condition has resolved itself, nor does it address how to eat once you've healed. There is information available to help you understand how you must eat daily to avoid the cause of these infections.
